The Maryland Terps (2-1) couldn’t complete the sweep and were defeated by the Georgia Southern Eagles (1-2) 7-3.
Maryland’s offense struggled in the series finale against Georgia Southern pitcher Ty Fisher. Fisher allowed just one run on eight strikeouts and one walk through six innings. Meanwhile, it was the opposite for Maryland. Junior Meade Johnson made his 2024 Terps debut but could only manage three ⅓ innings before being pulled out of the game. Johnson allowed five runs during his first appearance of the season.
The Terps and Eagles totaled the same amount of hits (7) but the difference was Georgia Southern had twice the amount of walks as Maryland.
The Terps scored first, but then the Eagles scored five unanswered runs. With two outs in the third inning, fifth-year senior Charlie Gelnon recorded his first base hit on the season, registering a two-out double. Shortly after, Freshman Brayden Martin plated Gelnon with a base hit.
However, in the following inning, Georgia Southern took the lead with a big offensive inning. Base hits, errors, and a wild pitch allowed the Eagles to take a 3-1 lead going into the fourth inning. Moreover, the onslaught continued when Luke Odden hammered a double down the right-field line, and he was brought home via a Josh Tate single.
Junior Jacob Orr helped to cut the Terps deficit with an RBI single, and a few batters later, Junior Eddie Hacopian scored because of a wild pitch. However, it wasn’t only a short time until the Eagles expanded their lead, with Sam Blancato hitting a solo home run in the bottom of the seventh.
Maryland will now return home to College Park where they’ll take on Mount St Mary’s at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday.
