Tonight, the No. 18 ranked Maryland Women’s basketball team has their home opener at the Xfinity Center in College Park, Maryland. The Terps are 1-0 after beating UMBC 74-32 on the road in their first game on Monday. Tonight’s opponent is the unranked Coppin State Eagles of the MEAC.
This 2024-2025 basketball team has 10 new players and seven transfer portal players to this season’s roster coached by head coach Brenda Frese who is in her 23rd season in College Park. She’s led the Terrapins to a record of 582-161 (.783), 14 conference titles, 20 NCAA Tournament bids in 22 postseasons, three Final Fours, seven Elite Eights, 11 Sweet Sixteens and the 2006 NCAA Championship.
Maryland has Shyanne Sellers back to lead this team. She was named to the Ann Meyers Drysdale Award Watch List for the nation’s top shooting guard, and last year was was named to the 10-player All-Big Ten Preseason Team for the second straight season.
The Terrapins also return All-Big Ten honoree Bri McDaniel, as well as Emily Fisher, Emma Chardon and Allie Kubek for the 2024-25 season.
The Terrapins welcome Big East Co-Defensive Player of the Year Christina Dalce, Atlantic 10 Player of the Year Sarah Te-Biasu, All-Big Ten First Team honoree Kaylene Smikle, All-SEC Freshman Team honoree Saylor Poffenbarger, as well as Mir McLean, Amari DeBerry and Isimenme Ozzy-Momodu.
Poffenbarger was a transfer from Arkansas, and she was named to the Cheryl Miller Award Watch List for the nation’s top small forward. Poffenbarger is from Middletown, Maryland and was originally recruited to play at Connecticut.
Frese also recruited three incoming freshmen with Ava McKennie, Kyndal Walker and Breanna Williams. All three won championships in high school.
